Australians are remarkable
in their generosity in both time and money.
In monetary terms the
majority of the 7.2 million Australian households “give” about 50% of their direct
income, over $100 billion dollars, to Local Bodies, State or Federal
Governments. The bulk of this money is then redistributed into services, especially
for the needy in social security and welfare, health and education. The
aged and the families with children receive about
$15B each.
In the use of their time,
Australians generously devote time to “volunteer” activities such as
supporting health services, old people, raising young families, running
clubs, fire services, running the household, etc. Even profit driven
events such as the Olympic Games, involved volunteers which saved the
Games organisers about $100m.
